Plain English

Post by Keith Langley »

Hi Mason, I've been using Daily Prayer for years. Today, I had to look up the word "Necromancy" as I didn't know what it meant. This is by no means the first time I've had to look up the meaning of a word. I believe that as Christians, if we use words not used by non-belivers, we alienate them and make it harder for them to come to faith. Jesus spoke the language of his listeners and we should do the same.

Sometimes through design or just happenstance we have one of those, "made you look, didn't I" moments. Sometimes I read right past a word and that's how I used to read the Bible, but because of a Bible study class I attend I have found every word of God has relevance and needs to be absorbed and studied thoroughly. Thanks for pointing this word out, I just learned a new word.

I love learning new words and Mason has taught me plenty over the years. I hope Mason will continue to ''teach" us new words, phrases and ideas. I think the general public can handle big words just fine. I don't like it when people "dumb things down."

Necromancy was not a new word to me and I expect a lot of young people who watch the horror movies or those who dabble in any sort of the occult (unfortunately getting quite common) are familiar with the word. I think Daily Prayer has a very good balance of simple, easy to understand, lessons with a few that are more challenging. Yes, Jesus spoke the language of his listeners, but he never seemed to be, "dumbing it down," for them. For example, he expected them to be familiar with scriptures.
