Bible translations

Post by Guest »

This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice!
Mason, quite a while ago you made discourse on the various Bible translations. Can you direct me to when that was so I can review your thoughts. I am thinking about getting a new study Bible and want some guidance.
Everyday you help me begin my day by focusing on God. Thank you for your tireless commitment to this ministry. Know that you are sharing God’s love with many people.

I can't find the article right now, but I can give you my thoughts. The NASB is the most accurate Bible and good for very close study. The ESV is a good blend of accuracy and readability. It's what I use -- I have a big white ESV study Bible, and it is really good but heavy. The NKJV is great also and retains much of the beauty and poetry of the KJV. My #1 choice for Psalms and such. There is a less common "Berean Study Bible" (on Bible Hub) that I also use and really like.

The NLT is simplified and quite good -- I use it for reading difficult passages, especially like Exodus, Numbers and such, but it's fine for getting the primary meaning of Pauline Epistles and such. Just don't argue about word choices with someone using another Bible, lol -- it's not authoritative about fine points.

I encourage people to avoid the NIV -- the NT is poorly translated and, at least in a couple of instances, apparently intentionally mistranslated to favor reformed theology. There are hundreds of little mistakes in it.

Thank you for that guidance.
God’s blessings to you and each of our brother and sisters in Christ!
