Problems in Exodus story

Mason today wrote, "The concept of a loving and constant God was difficult to grasp" for the Hebrews.

Honestly, it's pretty difficult for me to grasp right now because there are so many places in this story where God in the story does things that seem like the exact opposite of love. He torments powerless people with bugs and frogs, ruins their water supply, sends hail on servants/slaves who had no choice but to be outside working, and just flat out kills innocent people (e.g. firstborns would have included babies and children). How is this is evidence of a loving God?

I cannot see Jesus doing any of this.

Okay, I will try to cover this topic in our study of the Gospel of Matthew. You are not alone, a lot of people struggle with this.

I'm not planning a series on Romans anytime soon, but you might try reading the first chapter.

The way I see it is God's covenant with the His people in the Old Testament was follow the law or else. The new covenant brought to us through Jesus is one of love. Believe in Jesus for everlasting peace. I think God saw we were incapable of following the law no matter the consequences. The way back to God is through forgiveness and belief. People ask me if God is so good, why all the hardships, loss and sadness. I say this is not God but rather the evil in the world doing what it loves best. Although the workings of evil exist ,(which by the way was our choice), the God of love is constantly with us offering us His strength, love, peace and victory.

Thanks, Carol! I appreciate hearing your thoughts

I’m curious - what do you mean when you say that the workings of evil was our choice?

I was thinking of the fact God gave us free choice and Adam and Eve made the evil choice. We humans continue to make the evil choice in our thoughts, words and deeds, even when we don't want to slip that way. Thank you Jesus for forgiveness and the strength to start again.

I agree Carol, I know I keep finding in my self the same pridefulness, over and over. I am grateful to God every time pride shows up, that He forgives. Also that His Spirit guides me to see my sin. - Sherry in Washington
